چکیده

We use absolutely calibrated data between 3 and 90 GHz from the 2006 balloon flight of the ARCADE 2 instrument, along with previous measurements at other frequencies, to constrain models of extragalactic emission. Such emission is a combination of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) monopole, Galactic foreground emission, the integrated contribution of radio emission from external galaxies, any spectral distortions present in the CMB, and any other extragalactic source. After removal of estimates of foreground emission from our own Galaxy, and the estimated contribution of external galaxies, we present fits to a combination of the flat-spectrum CMB and potential spectral distortions in the CMB. We find 2 σ upper limits to CMB spectral distortions of μ < 5.8× 10 and |Yff| < 6.2 × 10 . We also find a significant detection of a residual signal beyond that which can be explained by the CMB plus the integrated radio emission from galaxies estimated from existing surveys. After subtraction of an estimate of the contribution of discrete radio sources, this unexplained signal is consistent with extragalactic emission in the form of a power law with amplitude 1.06±0.11 K at 1 GHz and a spectral index of −2.56± 0.04. An optical counterjet in 3C66B?

Long exposure observations at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope of 3C66B in the I filter are presented. After subtraction of the galactic background, optical emission on the counterjet side is detected in 10 knots coincident with the radio counterjet. Their radio-to-optical spectral indices (0.5–0.6) are typical of synchrotron emission in extragalactic jets, so that these knots possibly are th...

Extended and Compact Extragalactic Interpretation and Theory

The interpretation of strong double radio sources in terms of the "beam" model is reviewed. Implications of this model for source evolution and the nature of radio trails are briefly discussed. A final section is concerned with deductions about the properties of compact and variable components in quasars and galactic nuclei.

A new estimate of the extragalactic radio background and implications for ultra - high - energy gamma - ray propagation

A new estimate of the extragalactic radio background and implications for ultra-high-energy gamma-ray propagation Abstract We make a new estimate of the extragalactic radio background down to kHz frequencies based on the observed luminosity functions and radio spectra of normal galaxies and radio galaxies. We have constructed models for the spectra of these two classes of objects down to low fr...

On the Contribution of Unresolved Blazars to the Extragalactic Gamma Ray Background

We present a model for estimating the blazar contribution to the extragalactic γ-ray background (EGRB) in the EGRET energy range. It is based on inverse-Compton scattering as the dominant γ-ray production process in the jets of flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lac objects, and on the unification scheme of radio-loud AGN. Depending on the evolutionary behaviour of radio-loud AGN, our e...
